Drama Studies

What is Drama Studies?

Drama is the study of theatrical activity throughout western history (over two thousand years), and across numerous cultures (Australia, Europe, and many nations in between). Students who take Drama see and critique professional performance, read plays from around the world, and, at the advanced level, develop performances of their own. There isn’t an audition, but students take tutorials in a theatre: students can, then, hone their performance skills.

Study Opportunities in Drama?

Undergraduate courses examine a wide variety of dramatic styles and forms after which students can go on to advanced study in areas ranging from medieval street theatre to the most recent Australian and European drama. Students in their third year of a Drama Major may apply for a semester exchange at Royal Holloway College, London. Advanced subjects may be paired with a performance project. Secondments to local theatre companies can be arranged for credit for students who wish to consider working in the theatre industry (through DRAM 3102).  Honours can be undertaken in Theatre Studies.

Research Higher Degrees can be undertaken in areas where appropriate supervision is available, and a specialised Doctor of Philosophy in Drama (Performance and Thesis) is offered.
