His feet marched in sudden proud rhythm over the sand furrow, along by the boulders of the south wall. (42)

"Their dog ambled about a bank of dwindling sand, trotting, sniffing on all sides.  Looking for something lost in a past life.  Suddenly he made off like a bounding hare, ears flung back, chasing the shadow of a lowskimming gull" (46)

This portion of Sandymount strand (looking south) is land which has been reclaimed since 1904. Leahy's Terrace, from which the two old women descend (38), is just off to the right.
