A Free One Day Workshop Add On to WIP Conference
Organised by EMAPS, School of English, Media Studies and Art History and the
Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies
27th September 2004

Immediately following the WIP Bad Ideas conference will be a one day
workshop on postgraduate "business". The day will consist of three sessions:
"Publishing Business", "Developing the Research Grant and Post Doctoral
Application" and "Intersecting with Research Centres"

This event is open to all WIP delegates but bookings are essential. To reserve your place e-mail wip@uq.edu.au

"Publishing Business"
When your only relation to a journal is an impersonal rejection note, long
periods of time when you do not hear from them, and then acceptance but
delayed publication dates which makes your work out of date and a door with
the journal's name on it... then this session is for you. This panel is
about the mechanics and politics of journal publishing with a particular
focus on journals connected with the School of English, Media Studies and
Art History.

"Developing the Research Grant and Post Doctoral Application"
The Australian Research Council and most Universities offer post-doctoral
fellowships for early career researchers. Both generally require students to
take these up at a university other than the one they do their PhD in. This
session is designed to give an indication of some of the steps involved in
developing a competitive application. A subsidiary focus is upon the often
overlooked research grant opportunities available during PhD candidature.

"Intersecting with Research Centres"

Increasingly Universities are turning to research centres as the principal
vehicle for research. This panel which will include research centre
directors will talk about the various ways postgraduates can productively
intersect with research centres. The session is also designed to enable
postgraduates with an opportunity to intersect with the Australian Cultural
Research Network convened by Graeme Turner (the Centre for Critical and
Cultural Studies Director) which has five year funding to to facilitate
interdisciplinary exchange by virtual connections, web-enabled databases,
travelling master classes, and seminars and symposia. It has a particular
brief to bring established Australian researchers into direct contact with
postgraduates and young researchers in these fields and to pursue
international linkages. If you want to find out more about the Cultural
Research Network go to http://cccs.uq.edu.au/crn/

The Workshop will be held at the Centre for Critical & Cultural Studies
Level 4, Forgan Smith Tower (Bldg 1)
